The Nový Zámek Pond – Zahrádky and Conduit

The Nový zámek pond and Nový zámek and Mnichov conduits are situated in the village Zahrádky near Česká Lípa.
The Nový zámek conduit is a deep, man-made drainage channel from the Nový zámek pond, cut into the rock. It is 175m long and 14m deep and is 7m wide at its widest point. The water flows into the Robečský stream. A tributary of the Bobř stream also flows through the Mnichov conduit, named after the now non-existent village of Mnichov. The pond was probably created in the 14th century under the reign of Emperor Charles IV where there had been marshes at the confluence of the Robečský and Bobř streams. Archive documents can tell us more about the time of its creation and its name. However, by studying the structure of the pond, the drainage system cut into the rock, the earth-filled dam we can conclude that it was probably created in 1443. An area of 357.89ha has been a bird reserve since 1933 and in 1991 the vicinity of Nový zámek and Břehynský ponds was written into the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importace.

The pond has a 110m long earth-filled dam which holds 1.29 million m3 water and extends to 40ha. The 17th century timber outlet was replaced in 1997 with a replica and over time all the equipment of the pond has been restored. The reservoir is important for fish husbandry. During construction the builders made use of a rocky outcrop upon which they built the dam. Water levels were regulated by a massive semi-circular curved conduit and sluice.Reeds occupy an area over 200ha, the most to be found on any Czech pond. Traditionally these reeds were used as bedding, matting or roofing material. In 1868 the production of at first handmade and later woven reed mats of various sizes and shapes was founded.
Woodland encroaches the outer boundaries of the reserve.
The pond itself, as an example of pond creation in the region, is both an important piece of engineering history, and a key nature reserve. The preservation of the natural environment here enabled creation of a Bird Site under the European Commission NATURA 2000 network.
