The Biscuit Production, Lomnice nad Popelkou

The tradition of biscuit production in Lomnice nad Popelkou is based on the guild production of confectionery from 1580. Lomnice biscuits went on to become as well-known here as Pardubice gingerbread and Znojmo gherkins. Their popularity grew in part due to the famous and popular fairs held on Tábor hill above the town, the biscuits baked by individuals and whole families in Lomnice. The two most prominent companies then won renown for production in the 19th century, those of Josef and Antonín Jína. The founder of the best-known of companies from Lomnice was Michal Jína (in 1824), whose sons Antonín and Josef began doing business independent of each other. The older Josef worked out of Račany, before moving to the square in Lomnice, where he began baking biscuits and other confectionery at building number 99. His son Hynek then introduced machine production. The products – biscuits, wafers, gingerbread – were known throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, mainly at court balls in Vienna. His son Josef took control of the company in 1901 and built a new biscuit factory equipped with  modern machinery and  ovens  in

Smetanova Street in 1907 and 1908. The products of J. Jína were well recognised at trade fairs in this country and abroad. However, the plant was forced to close at the end of the war and is now used for other production needs. Karel Antonín Jína, another of the generation of Jínas, built a new factory in Jičínská Street between 1925 and 1927. His sons then expanded this in 1937. The modern appearance of the factory dates back to 1942, when another floor was added, as were offices and a rear annexe for 150 employees. The company became well-known in an advert that played on the name of the owner. Both factories were nationalised in 1948, with the new "Lomnice Biscuit and Children’s Food" national enterprise becoming the biggest producer of the latter in Czechoslovakia. Antonín Jína’s building in Jičínská Street was returned to the Jína family, which with the support of the town is once again making renowned Lomnice biscuits according to a traditional recipe in the former forestry apprentice centre. Of course you can also wander through the town to find and sample traditional products at other confectioners with their own recipes.
